Stussy and its current fall collection (Fall 2021) is now available at POPNAME. The now iconic brand Stüssy and its central motif of Shawn Stüssy's signature and mirrored initials continue to this day, even after 30 years of operation, in its successful campaign through the fashion industry.
The company's founder, Shawn Stussy (born 1954), was a California surfboard manufacturer. The logo that defines the brand took shape in the 1980s after he began scratching his last name into handmade surfboards with a broad nib. Inspired by his uncle Jan Stüssy's signature, he also used this logo on T-shirts, caps and shorts that he sold out of the trunk of his car around Laguna Beach, California. In addition to surfing, he first looked for inspiration in music, punk and rock, later also hip-hop, or fashion icons from around the world and, last but not least, skateboarding.
In 1984, Stüssy and his friend Frank Sinatra Jr. (no relation to the singer Frank Sinatra Jr.) teamed up to sell clothing. The company expanded into Europe in 1988 and later opened a boutique in New York City's Soho neighborhood. The brand spread throughout the United States through stores offering clothing themed around the California lifestyle. Outside the United States, the clothing was available in stores offering designer foreign fashion. In 1996, Stüssy resigned as director and sold his share of the company to Sinatra, whose family still owns it.
