Daniel Johnston was an American singer, pianist, guitarist, painter, and comic book author.
Born in Sacramento, California, but raised in West Virginia, the youngest of five children of William and Mabel Johnston, he began recording his own songs on a Sanyo tape recorder in the late 1970s. In 1981, he began distributing his first album, Songs of Pain , to his friends, which he recorded himself at his parents' house. He later recorded a number of other albums, most of which were recorded entirely by himself.
His songs have also been recorded by musicians such as Tom Waits, Yo La Tengo, and Lana Del Rey. Nearly four dozen covers of his songs were released on the 2004 album The Late Great Daniel Johnston: Discovered Covered . He died in 2019 at the age of 58.
