Janoski Flyleather

Innovative model of Stefan Janoski FLYLEATHER shoes.

The iconic Stefan Janoski silhouette is reborn in the Nike SB Stefan Janoski Flyleather RM. The shoe is flexible, lightweight, and crafted from revolutionary materials from top to bottom.

“We tried to capture every detail we could,” says Jarod Courtney, Signature Line Manager for Nike SB, “and we wanted to make this shoe as sustainable as possible while still maintaining its functionality as a skate shoe.” In addition to the Flyleather upper, which is made from at least 50% recycled leather fiber, the Janoski Flyleather also features 3% Nike Grind in the outsole and sidewall. Nike Grind takes discarded manufacturing rubber, crushes it into tiny grains, and reconstitutes it into everything from shoe soles to athletic surfaces.

But beyond Flyleather and Nike Grind, the shoe's entire design process had SUSTAINABILITY in mind. "As we move forward, we want to emphasize sustainability in skate footwear and apparel," Jarod says, "(we want) it to be part of every decision, from material selection to pattern making, etc." The Janoski FL demonstrates that everything from the use of shoelaces and a tongue tag made from recycled materials to the minimally embroidered Swoosh on the side panel needed to be considered, with every element of the shoe being reviewed to see if it could be lighter, if we could use less, or if recycled materials could be used.

But that's just the beginning, Jarod and the rest of the SB design team see the Janoski FL as just the first step on a long journey towards making sustainable shoes and apparel. "I'm already seeing designers starting to look at ways to maximize the use of recycled materials across all components of the shoe, using manufacturing methods that use less energy, or looking at materials that use less to produce.

... it may not be obvious, and you may not even know it's there, but it's the right thing to do and we'll try to do it all the time."
