The iconic Nike SB Dunk High Pro shoe model in collaboration with the Atlas Skateboarding brand.
San Francisco-based skate shop Atlas, based in San Mateo, has teamed up with Nike SB for another great collaboration. The dynamic of storytelling collaborations is truly incredible, and Nike SB is riding the wave in a big way. Think Ben & Jerry's, Civilist, Medicom Toy, Strangelove, Travis Scott, Grateful Dead, or Chicago, ACG, Sashiko, and that's not to mention the upcoming ones.
The inspiration for this collaboration comes from an interesting yet unfortunate event that occurred thirty years ago, dubbed the “Great Blob of 1990.” A container ship named the Hansa Carrier was traveling from Korea to the States and was hit by a massive storm that resulted in the loss of 21 giant cargo containers, five of which contained 61,000 pairs of Nike shoes. The shipment included a pair of white and blue Nike Air Flight 90s. They were not seen again until they washed up on the beaches of the Pacific Northwest about six months later. Despite the unfortunate circumstances, it wasn’t all doom and gloom, as the unexpected landing of the containers actually allowed oceanographers to test several complex theories related to Pacific currents.
The funny thing is that it really could have happened that some of them were found on the shore, so Atlas and Nike SB decided to draw inspiration from this story.
The cracked smooth white leather upper is complemented by two accent shades. The first is a muted blue that is prominently displayed on the Swoosh, tongue, outsole and ankle collar, while the second includes a vintage yellow that is applied to the laces and midsole.
The Nike SB x Atlas Dunk High boasts a similar white cracked upper as the Dunk SB Hi Flamingo from 2015 and the Nike SB Dunk Low Porcelain from August 2019. The embroidered "Nike SB Atlas" logo on the top of the tongue is inspired by the aforementioned Nike Air Flight 90 shoe model.
